Charli D'Amelio's New York era: Kate Spade campaign and 'DWTS' advice for Alix Earle
Charli D'Amelio has had quite the debut year so far -- and she's just getting started.
The 21-year-old content creator and dancer is currently performing on Broadway in the ensemble role of Charmion in "& Juliet," embracing a new vulnerable side of herself onstage.
Offstage, she also is the new face of Kate Spade New York's latest campaign, along with Grammy-nominated rapper Ice Spice. The campaign is a vibrant tribute to friendship, individuality and the people who carry us through.
"My life has changed in so many ways this past year," D'Amelio told "GMA." "I've really learned a lot about myself being on my own for the first time, taking care of myself and giving my all to each process."
D'Amelio said that performing live has truly surprised her emotionally.
"There's so much going through your head when you're onstage," she said. "Sometimes it gets emotional. I've cried on stage a few times just because you're in the moment. You see someone in the front row who needed to hear what's being said, and that just hits."
D'Amelio said she has also found a deep sense of community in her castmates. "We hang out even when we're not at the show," she said. "We've been through birthdays, life changes and Broadway debuts together. It's so special."
D'Amelio's fashion campaign with Kate Spade mirrors much of her reality right now: bold expression, community and life in New York City.
"I'm a big believer in not tying yourself down to a category," she said of her evolving style. "One day I'm super chill, the next I'm full glam. I let myself dress as whoever I want to be that day."
When asked who "carries" her -- a nod to the campaign's theme -- she credited her hometown friends, family and theater castmates.
"They've all helped me believe in myself in different ways," she said. "Sometimes you just need to look at your best friend after a show and let the emotion out."
As a "Dancing with the Stars" champion -- she won the show's 31st season alongside dance pro Mark Ballas -- D'Amelio offered heartfelt advice to newly announced season 34 cast member Alix Earle, a social media star like D'Amelio, who similarly found fame on TikTok.
"My biggest advice? Let yourself give into the process," she said. "Don't worry about what anyone else thinks -- just soak it all up."
She added, "Take pictures. Take videos. You can't do it again -- just enjoy everything."
D'Amelio credited "DWTS" for reigniting her love of dance and paving the way for her Broadway debut.
"It helped me in so many ways," she said.
As for what's coming after Broadway, D'Amelio said she is keeping things open.
"I don't know what's next, but I'm excited," she said. "I feel like I'm on the path of doing things I truly love -- and I'm going to keep following that."
