A suspect was detained Monday in connection with what Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called a terrorist bomb attack in Istanbul on Sunday. At least six people are dead and 53 injured, according to Erdogan.

According to the Associated Press, police detained Ahlam Albashir, a Syrian citizen, who is accused of leaving the bomb on the city's busy Taksim Istiklal Street, and almost 50 other people were also detained for questioning on the bombing.

"The United States strongly condemns the act of violence that took place today in Istanbul, Turkiye. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and our deepest condolences go to those who lost loved ones," the White House said in a statement Sunday afternoon. "We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our NATO Ally Turkiye in countering terrorism."

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
