May 12, 2014— -- Plows, shovels and bare hands were used to dig out from wild weather that has dumped a freak snow storm on the Rockies and sent tornadoes rampaging through the Midwest.

The clean-ups began as forecasters warned of more severe weather through central U.S. today that could range from thunderstorms to hail to more tornadoes.

Snow plows made an unseasonable appearance on the streets of Colorado towns and cities after a surprise snowstorm dumped as much as a foot of snow on the area and coated streets with ice.

More dangerous, however, were the twisters that ripped through the Midwest with Nebraska taking the brunt of the fury.

In Sutton, a town of 1,500 people located in south-central Nebraska, the Main Street was trashed, with storefronts destroyed and debris scattered along the roadway.

The storms also damaged homes and businesses around Garland, Cordova and Daykin, knocking out power to 18,000 customers.

The series of tornadoes – along with straight-line winds of more than 70 miles per hour – uprooted trees and knocked down power lines.

Other twisters touched down in Iowa and a tornado wrecked rooftops in Orrick, Mo., and left behind a massive debris field.
