Los Angeles County authorities said they're working to identify a young girl and a man whose bodies were mysteriously found in the same channel several miles apart.

The girl was located on Tuesday and the man was discovered on Wednesday, but their deaths are being investigated as two separate incidents as no connection has been established, the LA County Sheriff's Department said at a news conference.

The girl's body was found floating in the channel at the Dominguez Channel Bike Path in Carson, a city about 15 miles south of downtown LA, the sheriff's department said.

The unidentified girl was between 6 and 13 years old and had brown eyes and short dark brown or black hair, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities said they do not know how long she was in the channel and noted the body was in a "state of severe decomposition."

An autopsy is pending, authorities said Thursday.

On Wednesday morning, a second body was recovered several miles away in the Dominguez Channel, sheriff's officials said, describing the victim as a Black man possibly in his 50s.

The man, who also has not been identified, appeared to have been dead for less than 24 hours, authorities said. The autopsy is pending, the sheriff's office said, adding that there were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play.

"We're working all avenues, all ways of identifying who these individuals are,"  Carson Mayor Pro Tempore Cedric Hicks told reporters Thursday.

"We want to make sure that the city of Carson residents know that we are safe, the region is safe, and the area is safe," he said.
