Scottish grandmother sets oldest female Fortnite streamer record
A 78-year-old Scottish grandmother set a Guinness World Record for being the oldest female Fortnite streamer.
Cath Bowie, whose username is "grumpygran1948" on Fortnite and other platforms, regularly streams herself playing the video game for up to six hours a day, according to a Guinness World Records Facebook post.
Bowie was featured in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2027, which was released in September.
Bowie told Guinness World Records that she was "instantly intrigued" when she saw her grandson playing the game in 2017, when Fortnite launched Battle Royale mode, and that she has played ever since.
"Nearly nine years later, I am still playing it, still absolutely loving it and although still growing older, I have never made my age a deterrent," Bowie told the records organization. "Although I have tried several other games, I have never found the excitement that I get from Fortnite. I call myself a 'Fortniter' more than a gamer."
On Twitch, grumpygran1948 has over 24,000 followers.
She describes herself on her Twitch profile as "chatty, friendly, never toxic and a true bot."
Bowie's granddaughter suggested the username, though Bowie said it was a joke because everyone knows she does not grump, according to the records organization.
Bowie is featured in Guinness World Record Gamer's Edition 2027 alongside Max Baker, who became the youngest video game developer at 10 years old. He coded his own game, Gravity Parkour 2.0, in just four hours, according to the organization.
"At Guinness World Records, we believe gaming is for everyone, and this Edition showcases gamers of different generations and cultures from around the world," Alice Bell, editor of Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2027, stated in a press release.
Bowie said no one should be told they are too old to start gaming -- they should just do it, according to the release.
"The most important thing of all is that in all these years I have continued to enjoy every day, every week, every month and every year that I have played and streamed," Bowie told the records organization.
