June 10, 2014— -- intro: Jerad and Amanda Miller's murderous crime spree began when they ambushed two Las Vegas cops inside a pizza buffet on Sunday before heading to a local Walmart where police said they then killed a civilian before taking their own lives.

The couple was "prepared for a lengthy gun battle," Second Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill said. He said the couple, who had ties to anti-government groups, were armed with a shotgun and several handguns and backpacks stuffed with ammunition.

The couple were spotted by a rancher in a plane checking on his cattle about 30 miles west of Wendover. He phoned police, who said the couple surrendered without incident.

McFarland was given a 56-year prison sentence earlier this year in Nevada for a kidnapping, robbery and botched carjacking at a casino, according to the Associated Press. He also faces murder charges in Utah. Atwood, who is also known by the surname Hill, was sentenced to 30 years in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to burglary, kidnapping and robbery in the shooting of a woman during an attempted carjacking, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

quicklist: 2title: John McCluskey and Casslyn Welch text: The manhunt for the couple began on July 30, 2010 when McCluskey and two other inmates, Daniel Renwick and Tracy Province, escaped from Arizona State Prison. Officials said they got outside help from Welch, who was McCluskey's girlfriend and cousin.

The couple then led authorities on a three-week cross-country manhunt, leaving in their wake a string of robberies and the suspected murder of a New Mexico couple in their 60's. Their run came to an end when a forest ranger tipped off police. McCluskey and Welch were taken into custody near the town of Springerville, Ariz., near the border with New Mexico.

McCluskey was resting on a sleeping bag, according to authorities. Welch attempted to reach for a firearm, authorities said at the time, however she was immediately disarmed. McCluskey was sentenced to life plus 235 years earlier this month, while Welch was given a 40-year sentence.
