5 Best Moments From the 2014 Golden Globes
Jan. 12, 2014 — -- There's a reason why Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were tapped to host the Golden Globes for two years in a row: They know how to steal the show.
"When you host a show, you have to hopefully be funny at the top and set the tone for a really fun evening," Poehler said before the Golden Globes began. "When we did do it, it felt like it was pretty organic."
They succeeded. Below, read more about their monologue and four of the other biggest moments from the night.
1. Kerry Washington finally confirmed her pregnancy: For months, the Internet has buzzed about the "Scandal" star's reported pregnancy, but she finally confirmed it on the red carpet of the Globes. "I am," she said, showing off her growing belly in an Alexander Wang gown. "I feel like [Wang] designed it more for this bump. I just feel very blessed, truly extraordinary."
2. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's monologue: Sure, the former "Saturday Night Live" co-stars poked fun at their fellow actors, but they managed to do so in a lighthearted way that drew plenty of laughs. Perhaps their best joke came at the expense of George Clooney, who stars in "Gravity." "It's the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age," Fey said.
3. Genuinely shocked winners and their acceptance speeches: Many people claim to be surprised when their names are called in their respective categories, but perhaps the most shocked winners were Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. All stuttered through adorable speeches. "Don't ever do this again!" a shaking Lawrence said, and Poehler capped her victory by making out with Bono. Not too shabby!
4. Jacqueline Bisset cursing on stage: She was first nominated for a Golden Globe 47 years ago, so when Bisset's name was called at the start of the show, she began her acceptance speech with a few seconds of silence. Then, she wrapped it up by cursing -- and getting bleeped by the NBC censors. "For those who have given me s--t, like my mother always said, 'Go to hell and don't come back!'" she said.
5. Matthew McConaughey's acceptance speech: The winner of Best Actor in a Drama started his speech by making a subtle homage to his role in "Dazed and Confused." "All right, all right, all right," he drawled, before thanking his mother, wife and family.
