CVS announces new pharmacy option for pet owners
Dog and cat owners can now fill common pet prescriptions at more than 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide.
CVS Health announced Tuesday that CVS Pharmacy is now dispensing select prescription medications for dogs and cats, including antibiotics, allergy medications, flea and tick treatments, insulin and pain relievers, making it easier for pet owners to access medications for their animals.
Eligible pet prescriptions can also take advantage of pharmacy services such as automatic refills and prescription synchronization, while select medications may be available for home delivery.
"We know that CVS Pharmacy is a trusted partner in our patients' health care journeys," Sid Tenneti, senior vice president and interim president of Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness at CVS Health, said in a statement Tuesday, adding, "With the launch of pet medication dispensing, our pharmacies are now able to serve every member of the family."
Pet owners can fill prescriptions by bringing a written prescription from their veterinarian to a CVS Pharmacy or asking their veterinarian to send it directly to the pharmacy. Once the prescription is received, customers can pick it up in store or choose delivery for eligible medications, according to CVS.
Pet owners can also add their pets to their CVS.com profile and manage eligible prescriptions through the CVS Health app.
CVS Health said additional features, including electronic prescribing capabilities for veterinarians, will be introduced in the coming months.
In adding pet prescriptions to its pharmacy options, CVS joins fellow retailers including Publix, Costco, Walmart and Walgreens, which also offer the option.
