Some cottage cheese products sold at Walmart across 24 states have been voluntarily recalled over the possibility that dairy ingredients may not have been "fully pasteurized according to state regulatory standards."

Wisconsin-based Saputo Cheese USA Inc., which produces Walmart's Great Value cottage cheese products, announced the recall Tuesday after it discovered the issue "during pasteurizer troubleshooting exercises conducted by SUSA in conjunction with the California Department of Food and Agriculture."

"This recall is being made with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration," Saputo Cheese said in the recall announcement.

As of time of publication, the company said no illnesses or hospitalizations have been reported, but warned that consuming products that are not fully pasteurized can pose a significant health risk, especially for young children, pregnant people, older adults and people who are immunocompromised.

The process of pasteurization, heating milk to a specific temperature for a set period of time, kills harmful organisms responsible for diseases such as listeriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diphtheria, Q fever, and brucellosis, according to the FDA.

The affected products include: Great Value Fat Free Small Curd Cottage Cheese with 0% Milkfat; Great Value Lowfat Small Curd Cottage Cheese with 2% Milkfat; and Great Value Small Curd Cottage Cheese with 4% milkfat minimum.

The products were distributed to Walmart stores and distribution centers in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming between Feb. 17 and Feb. 20, 2026, the company said.

Saputo noted that the impacted pasteurizer has since been returned to normal function, verified and sealed by state authorities. No other products produced in the facility were affected.

Customers who purchased the recalled cottage cheese have been urged to not consume it, and instead dispose of it or return it to Walmart for a full refund.

For shoppers in need of more information Saputo can be reached by phone at 1‑888‑587‑2423, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

Walmart also posted the recall on its website that linked to the Saputo announcement.
