Kate Middleton misses Royal Ascot races amid return to work post-cancer
As Britain's royal family gathered this week at an annual event on the royal calendar, Royal Ascot, one familiar face was missing: Kate, the Princess of Wales.
Kate, 43, was absent Tuesday and Wednesday from Royal Ascot, attended this year by her husband Prince William, as well as King Charles III, Queen Camilla and other royal family members.
Kate was expected to attend the annual horse racing event Wednesday as her name was listed on the Royal Ascot program, however her name was listed in error. Kensington Palace had not confirmed her attendance, ABC News has learned.
Kate, who shares three young children with William, has made a gradual return to public engagements this year since announcing in January that she is in remission from cancer. Kate has not shared details of the type of cancer with which she was diagnosed, though she has shared she underwent chemotherapy treatment.
Kate announced her cancer diagnosis publicly last year.
Describing Kate's decision not to attend Wednesday's races, a royal source told ABC News, "The princess is disappointed not to be there today but she has to find the right balance as she fully returns to public facing engagements."
Kate had a busy few days leading up to Royal Ascot. On Saturday, she joined William, their three children and other royal family members at Trooping the Colour, the king's annual birthday parade.
On Monday, Kate and William were part of the royal family contingent at the Order of the Garter service at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
On June 10, Kate made a solo visit to V&A East Storehouse, a new museum in London.
In her absence at Royal Ascot Wednesday, William joined Charles and Camilla in their carriage in the royal procession.
William is also set to award the race prizes on Wednesday.
