Henry Golding says becoming a father helped him realize 'what really matters in life'
Henry Golding is opening up about the joys and challenges of being a first-time dad and how he is supporting his wife as she embraces motherhood.
The "Crazy Rich Asians" star, 34 and his wife, Liv Lo, welcomed their first child in March, and the actor said the arrival their daughter has been "life-changing."
"It puts everything in perspective," Golding said about fatherhood during a recent interview with "Good Morning America."
"It has allowed me to really kind of focus in on what really matters in life," he added.
While the actor said life with their little one has been "amazing" and he, as well as his wife, have shared plenty of adorable snaps of her online, the couple was initially hesitant to do so.
"We were like, 'Ah, we don't want to put her on social media too much,'" Golding said before revealing what led to their change of heart.
He said that his wife realized, "'I just want to share my joy of this tiny little person that's brought so much joy to our lives. There's nothing wrong with that.'"
"I think she felt really comfortable, of course, sort of sharing her experience," Henry added about Lo. "It's so important for her to share her experience as a new mother, especially all the challenges that come with that."
Lo, a yoga instructor and founder of fitness app FitSphere, catalogued her journey to becoming a mother and shared updates throughout her pregnancy on her Instagram and blog.
Since welcoming her daughter, she's also opened up about some aspects of motherhood she's struggled with, including breastfeeding.
In one blog post she wrote about what to expect with breastfeeding, writing, "Breastfeeding was not graceful as I had imagined and I felt extremely underprepared."
Golding said his wife's experience with breastfeeding was "this entire world of something we didn't understand until she had to go through it, and she feels as though everybody goes into it not understanding."
"Everybody's like, 'Oh yeah, breastfeeding is easy,' it's whatever, but there's just -- there's an art form and just this natural ability that you mothers out there are just amazing at," he added.
Golding said he's "so proud" of his wife's ability to be vulnerable online about her life as a first-time mom and the challenges that come with it.
"it's so humbling to watch her go through that," he said. "I think every new mother will go through questioning themselves: 'Are they doing the right things? Am I being attentive enough? Am I feeding my baby enough to give her the nutrition she needs?'"
"And those all grind down on your mental well-being, and sometimes you just need to take a step back and look at it in the way, in the healthiest way possible, and that's like -- you are doing the best you can," he added. "And I think Liv really puts that out in her blog posts and on her Instagram really well."
