See how Pixar, Marvel worlds and more come to life at Disney parks
A new documentary giving an inside look at how some of the world's most beloved movies are turned into lands, areas and experiences at Disney parks around the globe will premiere on Disney+ on Aug. 20.
"Disney Worldbuilders" features interviews with filmmakers including James Cameron, Jon Favreau, Jennifer Lee, and Kevin Feige, who share how their films -- including "Frozen," "Avatar" and "The Avengers" -- became beloved destinations at the 12 Disney theme parks around the globe.
"Technology with a good piece of storytelling creates this immersive experience," Favreau says in the trailer for the documentary.
Former Disney CEO and senior advisor Bob Iger, Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, and current Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro are also featured in the documentary.
Attendees at this year's D23 event in Anaheim will be able to watch the "Disney Worldbuilders" at its debut screening on Aug. 16, ahead of its release on Disney+.
"Disney Worldbuilders" is directed by Leslie Iwerks, whose father and grandfather, Ub Iwerks and Don Iwerks, respectively, helped shape Disney storytelling.
"I wanted to understand what ignites the imaginations of the storytellers behind some of the world's most beloved stories,” Iwerks said in a statement about the documentary. “As I sat down with each of them, I discovered a common thread: they often traced their creative journeys back to a single childhood moment—walking through the gates of Disneyland and realizing that impossible dreams could become real."
She continued, "It's a feeling I know well, and one that has shaped my own journey. My hope is that audiences leave with that same sense of possibility and inspiration."
